Maybe this literay test should have been given out when HE was in school. The public wouldn't have to deal with so many of these, "bushisms" if they only would have thought of this sooner.

Maybe we need a literacy test (college level) for Presidential Candidates- THAT would have kept this bozo out of office!

I don't understand why he would make this a necessary public statement if all he's doing is declaring his childhood deprivations in the past, which I'm sure none of us really gives a crap about.

Yes, but passing the test shouldn't simply be the point either. In Florida, we have something called the FCAT, an education accountability test which is administered to kids in elementary and secondary public schools. I have no problem with this, but I believe that teachers shouldn't spend the entire school year teaching kids how to take a test. Teachers hate doing this because it doesn't allow the kids to maximize learning. Rather than learning in a methodical way, the kids are just learning test taking strategies, no purpose really. Teachers hate doing this because it is not an effective learning strategy. Te They have the right idea, but standardized testing should be more integrated into a standard curriculum and it should take into account the needs of different school districts.

And maybe with some good schooling, they can learn to pronounce multiple syllable words like nuclear, for example.
