ItemImageHector, the greatest Trojan warrior, was the eldest child of King Priam and Queen Hecabe, crown prince of Troy, and seemingly a pious and humble man. Naturally, Hector became the leader of the alliance defending Troy. In the waning years of the war Hector was killed by Achilles, revenging the death of Patroclus.

I first read Pope's Iliad over fifty years ago, when I was in school, and I have read other translations since. I must say that I really have deep feelings for Hector. I have a hard time explaining the sympathetic emotions that I feel for Hector. He is the most noble and favorable character that Homer describes. His death still brings tears to my eye when I read of it. Now I know this sounds wimpy and weak, but such nobilty falling to the scoundrel, Achilles, is just too much!

By the way, the Iliad ends at Hector's death.

For some reason, I always sympathized with the Trojans in their mythical war with the Greeks. Perhaps it was due to my normal attraction to the underdogs, but most likely it is due to my impression that the Trojans were more human and imperfect. Looking back, Homer seems to point out the frailties of the Trojans more so than his fellow Greeks, and Hector is the epitome of the reluctant hero. The reader can feel the genuine love Hector has for his wife Andromache and his preference for a less glorious life, yet his duty requires that he protect his father (King Priam) and his brother Paris. What a shame that Hector had to succumb to the more arrogant Achilles.

A great side effect of the movie Troy is now many of the educational channels are doing specials on the Trojan War. Hector, the hero of Troy and symbolic of what is an ideal warrior, was also a devoted family man, making him an extremely likeable character. He remained unbeaten on the battlefield until he accidentally killed Achilles' friend (and, in some accounts, lover or cousin; maybe something was lost in translation, I don't know) Patroclus, and Achilles sought revenge. His corpse was dragged around the walls of Troy and, in some accounts, dragged around Patroclus' tomb for twelve days. After the fall of Troy, the rest of his family suffered: his father was killed, his mother was given to Odysseus as reward, his infant son was hurled from the walls of the city, his wife was given to Neoptolemus as loot, his sisters were raped/killed/given as property to others. The movie was MUCH nicer with the ending. Sad how one who could be seen as almost the ideal man had such a humiliating end.
