Andromache (as does Penelope, the wife of Ulysses) represents the dutiful spouse of a hero, in this case the Trojan champion Hector. She often pleads with Hector to think of her and their infant son Astyanax, yet they both know his first duty lies with the defense of Troy and the House of Priam. Andromache remains a tragic figure, and seems human and sympathetic, even by contemporary standards.
