not a huge baseball fanatic but cannot help but be touched by a speech of a baseball player who was struck down by a devastating illness that took his life. a sad speech. he seemed like a good man who loved baseball. kind mean to make fun of him.

As a non-Yankee fan, how can someone attack the last public words of a great sports figure who was dying? Sicko.

Norm McDonald once did this hilarious skit on SNL about this subject. I'm being sarcastic people! I'm probably one of the UNluckiest people on earth! I have a disease so rare, it's named after ME! Anything can be made humorous, even this most touching of speeches. It was one of the saddest days in baseball, but as I've said before, there is nothing on earth that is sacred.

NO! NO! NO! NONONONONONONONO! I hate the Yankees but Gehrig's speech is a sacred cow to me. Where's the love, man? (By the way, this sacred cows list is funny as hell. . .)

The guy was one of the greatest players who ever stepped between the foul lines, and possibly the greatest first baseman ever. He accomplished amazing things in his career, largely overshadowed by Ruth. This event, however, was just a speech, and a pretty standard one at that. Say that, and the nostalgists and Yankee fans will be all over you like ugly on an ape.
