Perhaps the most important and brilliant poetic work of the 20th century--certainly by any Western poet.

I cannot speak of this literary achievement without complete awe. With this poem, or rather, these four poems, Eliot joins the immortals of literature. This is a work to rank with Paradise Lost, the Canterbury Tales, and the finest of Shakespeare. No one, with the possible exception of Yeats at his very finest, has touched this kind of excellence in a century and a half. "The future futureless, before the morning watch When time stops and time is never ending; And the ground swell, that is and was from the beginning, Clangs The bell.
