The early Get Smart shows had Maxwell Smart driving a different car (I believe it was an Opal) but soon switched to the Shelby Sunbeam Tiger. Sometimes dubbed the poor man's Cobra Sunbeam Tigers (named for the 1926 land speed record holder) was Rootes attempt to build a Cobra like automobile so in 1964 a development deal was struck with Shelby American. The majority of Tigers came with a Ford 260 V-8 two barrel engine, Ford 4 speed toploader transmissions (T-10s were used later) which fed power to a salisbury rear end. High performance options were available over the counter which were 4 barrel Holley carburetors, Edelbrock F-4B manifolds, (almost identical in design to Cobra intakes) traction bars and mag wheels. Shelby could not devote a great deal of time to the development of the Tiger as he was working full time developing cars to defeat Ferrari, which he did on July 4th 1965 winning the manufacturer's cup. The last 530 or so Tigers came with 289 engines and production ceased in 1967. It's too bad that Get Smart did not have any car chase scenes because Maxwell Smart's Shelby Sunbeam Tiger could have run rings around almost any other production car that was available at that time. That includes Jaguars, Corvettes, even some small block Cobras. The record books don't lie. Next time you view the opening to Get Smart look at the chrome fender emblem just forward of the driver's door and you'll know that when you're watching Get Smart, you're seeing two classics at the same time.
