 | abichara (60) 03/28/2005 | Lets see how the institutions develop. Trends seem to indicate so far that when provided the right to vote, Middle Easterners from Iraq to Egypt and Saudi Arabia en masse tend to shun moderate reformers for the religious parties. We have to keep in mind ultimately that voting alone does not make a democracy. Majority rule doesn't necessarily imply that justice will be carried out. Democracy can't be directly correlated to freedom as well; the freedom to vote isn't liberty. Voting can be correlated to freedom only if very stringent limits are placed on the powers of elected officials and if individual rights are respected. Lets not pat ourselves in the back too early.

 | Jar-Jar Binks (16) 02/01/2005 | We didn't really have to go there did we? Iraq wudn't no threat to us. Those troops should be in the Mainland skirt chasing and playing poker, but instead they're stationed there fighting a cause that's not worth fighting for? ... That's why at 28 years old, I didn't bother going. Why should I? I have better things to do.

 | LanceRoxas (40) 01/31/2005 | Democracy is a system of government consistent with Natural Law and the universal principles that rule mankind. Government by consent and a vibrant free market of ideas that necessitates open forums are essential to freedom- and always worth fighting for.

 | EschewObfuscation (61) 01/31/2005 | No, a remarkably worthy goal. If this democracy endures, in almost any form, and these people are able to enjoy the benefits of freedom and self-rule, terrorists and dictatorial despots will have to deal with their own Domino Theory. The stakes couldn't be higher for them.
