ItemImageAmazon.com's review of "Stalag 17": Black comedy and suspenseful action inside a German POW camp during World War II--a setting that was later borrowed for the TV sitcom Hogan's Heroes. The great director Billy Wilder adapted the hit stage play, applying his own wicked sense of humor to the apparently bleak subject matter. William Holden plays an antisocial grouse amid a gang of wisecracking though indomitable American prisoners. --Robert Horton

Certainly a dated B and W but the atmosphere created by William Holden is very memorable to me. I love it when he tells the guys to "keep walking and pretend you don't know me" if he sees them in the streets back home. . .

I don't like prison movies either. But this one is a great. One of my personal top 10. Holden is very good, like in so many other movies. Also the German supervisor officer is a funny character (even though a bit exaggerated, I think). And there's another American prisoner, too, that's very funny.

I'm with Genghis on this one. I don't like prison films and for that matter, I've never liked war films. Why this one appeals to me I don't know. But it's interesting, dramatic, funny in places, and I think Peter Graves makes a fascinating spy.

I don't like prison films, but I made an exception for this one starring William Holden and others. The scene where Otto Preminger puts on his cavalry boots to take the telephone call from Berlin is priceless! This flick still has some of that old thirties film noir flair.

A real classic movie. Would have liked to see a sequal made.
