Pitching and defense win championships. And that is what finally reversed the Babe's dreaded Curse. The Boss forgot what got him there. Threw all his money at big name hitters the last few years while watching his best clutch pitchers get away. For the Yankees fans, who seem to think winning is their birth-right, its now four years and counting since your last ring and here's hoping that stretch continues for quite a while!! Being humbled should help you come to realize how good you've had it!

They won't win it now!!! GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[21 OCT Update] Biggest choke job in the history of sports. Heads will be rolling like grounders when by the time Steinbrenner's purges are complete. [Original Post] The wheels are in place for another, so called, Boston-New York ALCS rivalry. Normally, a rivalry indicates that one team gets the best of the other and vice-versa. If the Red Sox and Yankees is considered a rivalry then the following are rivalries: Sledgehammer vs. Nail; The Ski team of Michael Kennedy and Sonny Bono vs. the Petrified Forest; Bound and gagged teenaged hitchhikers vs. Serial Killers. The Yankees bats are too potent and they will beat the Cardinals in 7.

HHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaa! The Evil Empire goes down on the biggest choke in Major League history! The only greater feeling then walking to work this morning across Manhattan seeing all the pouting Yankee fans will be on the morning of November 3rd after Bush wins four more years. My faith in the Lord is renewed. The reality is you can't hit your way to the World Series and the Yankees pitching failed them in the end just like most predicted at the beginning of the year. Here's some advice to all you lugubrious Yankee fans: soak in the feeling of loss and maybe someday you'll understand how to truly appreciate victory.

As a lifelong Yankee fan, it was tough to watch this but what a tremendous story for baseball. It is only appropriate that the Sox go to the World Series via New York, by beating their daddy. The most incredible collapse of a pro team I've ever seen, a darn good team, which won over 100 games with a weak, depleted pitching staff. Clutch hitting can only take you so far and the Yankees have proved it. A-Rod needed to show up, with a bat(is he still the highest paid baseball player, batting second?), Jeter's slump, Sheffield had good at-bats but almost never found anyone on base when he batted. Losing Giambi was a huge blow but Clark and Olerud filled in capably. And Mariano (sorry to say it) folded. Steinbrenner has got to be livid, and he will make big-time changes for next year, as if they're not coming anyway. What was incredible was that they somehow got ahead in games 3-0. Credit Boston, very gritty, inspired performance against a flat Yankee batting line-up and a pitching staff with so many questions. Any questions about where Kevin Brown might not be pitching next year? Javier Vasquez? Now don't they wish they could have made the Randy Johnson deal?

Personally, as a life long Yankee hater, I'd rather A-Rod was in their clubhouse than in Boston's. I think the guy is a cancer on the club, and when you add Sheffield to the mix it should make for a headcase season in the Bronx. Losing Pettite has seriously weakened the rotation, so while they will be a strong contender, I think they are a long way from a slam-dunk. UPDATE AFTER ALCS LOSS: A worthy losing opponent and the supporting role in one of the greatest series I have ever seen. Needed more help in the bullpen to make this work. Steinbrenner just won't listen. The pink slips are probably flying already.

the yankees need another championship like john kerry needs another opinion on the conflict in iraq. i am at the point that i really want my redsox to win, but it is enough to make me happy if the yankees lose. this team needs a dose of humility. the yanks don't have the pitching this year, but luck always seems to go their way. god, i hate the yankees.
Elf_ears13 10/07/2004
I sure hope they don't. They've won so many times, it almost looks fixed in their favor. What am I saying, almost?
the anomaly 10/07/2004
If they face the red sox there will be a dramatic series that they will find a way to win
jamestkirk 10/07/2004
They have the clutch-hitting and mental toughness to make it back to the World Series. What they lack is starting pitching. No arms on their staff approach what the Sox have in Schilling and Pedro. If they win, it will be more because of Boston choking rather than the Yankees winning. Can that happen? Oh, yes it can!

they only got there worst lost in franchise history this year...no way they're gonna win the pennant
Warya 04/21/2004
Good Chance. Needs better pitching!!!!
jojohn 04/20/2004
If this said Who is gonna buy the World Series the Yankees would get a 99 out of 5
baseballnut555 5 03/24/2004
the yankees could have one of the greatest linupes of all-time, but with so many stars on that team it could end up being a hug disaster
lukskywlkr. 03/21/2004
They probably will, but I sincerely hope they don't.

Go New York and go Joe Torre! The best manager in baseball deserves another ring!
ellajedlicka21 03/09/2004
With the juggernaut that is the New York Yankee projected lineup in 2004, it would be stupid not to pick them to win the Series this year. The offensive production will be there, that is a given. A big question mark will be the pitching. It was definitely a mistake to have let Andy Pettitte go, he was their best big-game pitcher in this unforgettable run of greatness that they've experienced. Leiber, Contreras, Javier Vasquez, Mussina, Kevin Brown--these are all guys that have had success in the past in starting rotations. Their bullpen is looking decent with the addition of Quantrill and Tom Gordon to go along with Steve Karsay returning after a season of injury and the always-reliable Mariano Rivera closing it out. I'm excited to watch another season unfold of my favorite team and the greatest in baseball (which will hopefully come to fruition in late October with a World Series victory).
minkey 03/09/2004
Who are we kidding - the Yankees will win it again in '04.
zuchinibut 03/08/2004
A Rod is a major start attraction for the Yankees, but he doesn't make them a favorite for the World Series in my book. The Yankees pitching depth is not what it used to be, and I don't see Lieber or El Duque getting things done. And there is now a HUGE whole at 2nd base, and now Sheffield's injury. The Yankees are crumbling, despite George's best efforts. The Yankees will miss Andy Pettite more than anyone in their organization will admit.
