Definitely one of the more beautiful love songs ever written, 'Longer' not only has withstood the elements of time with its bare simplicity and cadre of emotion within its lyrics, but it has made this late, great songwriter's music among the more sought after pop masterpieces of all-time.

 | alomewandsam (2) 10/07/2006 | I love Fogelberg. His greatest hits collection rocks (well, figuratively). "Leader of the Band", "Auld Lang Syne" - if you are feeling sentimental or blue, Fogelberg is for you.

 | MedgarEvers (15) 07/19/2006 | He might only be remembered by the general public as a soft rock guy, but he was oh so much more. He had the slight misfortune of never knowing what was really cool or racy in the culture of his time, but he made great, almost spiritual music nonetheless. I certainly like him better when he is holding a feather ("Souvenirs" and the other earlier albums) rather than a rose ("Greatest Hits" which harps on the schmaltzy '80s stuff). When he was a young, long-haired boy obsessed with American life and country-tinged music, he did wonderful things. He never lost the magic entirely and in some ways the albums got better as the years progressed. He has a great, strong voice and he seems to hold great value to the production of the music he makes--his singing and instrumentation are always dead-on and exact, in nice contrast to someone like Neil Young. My favorite songs are "Song from Half Mountain," "Illinois" and "Nexus." I saw him live at the Beacon Theater when I was younger (yes, my dad took me to see Dan Fogelberg) and despite inner turmoil over whether he is actually cool or not, I conclude that I don't care and that he is a fine musician.

Way too mellow for my tastes but he is a true talent. I have to give him some credit. And, I do like The Leader Of The Band.

 | oscargamblesfro (82) 12/05/2005 | Awful to the tenth power! Lame, sanctimonious, fifth rate singer songwriter stuff, maudlin, and almost incomprehensibly wimpy.

 | coleslough (1) 12/23/2003 | outstanding until he went too commercial. his early half (of his career) stuff was more true and unifluenced by radio play potential.

 | StanUzbeck (16) 09/04/2003 | I am sooooo glad that I wasn't around in the mid-seventies when I would have had to interact with people who liked this guy. Probably the single wimpiest singer in history, except for the dude from Bread, who may have written beautiful songs but was too pathetically earnest and saccharine to ever be taken seriously. People probably still giggle whenever he tries to make a reservation or something under his own name. "Sure Mr. Fogelberg (snicker), we'll take good care of you and make sure that your bed sheets are of the softest satin (he he). Would you like us to provide extra kleenex, or hummingbirds and freshly cut daffodils? (ha ha ha click)" Makes John Denver sound like Ozzy Osbourne.

 | TritonAgain (0) 04/08/2003 | Music for the easily-impressed. A third-rate Jackson Browne (who is only second-rate himself). It's a good thing Fogleberg is finally gone... isn't he? Please, god, say he is -- I can't stand anymore of his smug, whiny simpering.

 | michael_arbor (1) 12/05/2000 | 'Leader of the Band' and 'Run for the Roses', amazing how he could write songs about such diverse topics as a horse wining the Kentucky Derby and his Dad and sing them with the smae emotion... He was a decent songwriter and was a perfect balance and come down for the coked out listeners of the late 70s. He had one other love song that was really good and I know all of the words to, but cannot remember the title of. I am sure I will have his greatest hits record in another 10 years or so when my taste in music has completely dissolved.
