I definitely use pencil a lot when I'm drawing. I'm not one who can simply take a peice of charcoal and see where it leads me.

Obviously, it would be easier to correct mistakes made in pencil than those made in clay, wood or metal.

A great medium, easy to control. One of my best drawings, called Future's Rescue was done in pencil. A perspective drawing, it showed the USS Enterprise-E locking a tractor beam on the hijacked planes of 9-11, thus saving the day.
