Although its not his defining role, he had a great understated part in The Road to Perdition. Cool Hand Luke would probably be my nomination for his defining role. The Sting was a lot of fun.

The Color of Money, followed closely by The Hustler and Cool Hand Luke.

How's this for an underrated Newman gem- "The Verdict"

Another actor with lots of great roles but I'll give it to "Absence of Malice." Subtle and understated performance of the less-is-more variety.

Don't know too many of Newman's works, but my favourite has to be 'The Road to Perdition'. That was a great movie, and a truly great performance.

Of the many outstanding, considered and thoughtful performances Paul Newman has given, I believe the portrayal of the recovering alcholic plaintiff's lawyer in The Verdict was his finest. He very much captured the essence of a flawed human being who had been worn down by life but had managed to retain a core of decency and sense of righteousness.

paul newman had it going on with those baby blues. his best movie would have to be butch cassidy and the sundance kid or road to perdition
