ooo...ponies! I rode horses for a long time growing up, and I <3 them despite how horrifically impractical it would be to have one. I recommend leasing or training them for other people for anyone younger whose parents are practical enough not to buy one for their horse-crazy daughter.

Big upkeep, big turds as CS pointed out, not to mention that they are bitchy little things sometimes. I stay away from them and have yet to ride one.

Big. Expensive. Large turds. Won't fetch. Can't take it on the subway if a vet visit is in order. Kinda below average for me. (Okay, you can ride it- that bumps it up one star.)

This isn't a pet, it's either a farm animal or a racing animal.

Some years ago, I was a part owner of a race horse. Middle to low claimer, had a brief and not unsuccessful career before bowing a tendon and being retired to a riding horse.

I used to visit it at the stable, watch it work, and stand in the winner's circle on the occasions it won.

Only "pet" I ever owned who made money for me.

I believe this animal would have been a perfect specimen to have used for transportation before the invention of the car. I wonder why nobody thought of that?

If you have a farm or just are rich enough to afford keeping one in a stable, they could make good pets. But they are really high maintenance animals.

Horses can make wonderful, loving pets, and there are many fun activities you can enjoy with them. The drawbacks, of course, are the expense of feeding and housing them.

Horses are great to have, if live in the country or on a farm. However, they are very expensive to take care of, and need alot of space.

If Cuddles can guide her blind owner through the urban jungle called Manhattan, she's not pampered housepet.

Requires more attention than most pets, and needs to be groomed and cared for properly. Owning one comes with a lot of responsibility. Not for everyone.

Can be wonderful, and they're great to have for rides, but they're extremely impractical. You cannot keep them in your home; you need some distant home for them. And that's part of the extreme expense and high maintenance. Everything w/a big animal like this is EXPENSIVE, just daily regular maintenance. When he dies, what are you going to do? You'll be paying out again to have him removed, or doing alot of heavy work to move him to his grave if that's the plan. You're not getting much benefit unless you have your own farm stable by your home. You can't even see them much unless that's your job. Horses can be as wonderful as any other animal, but they're work and money, and you hardly get to enjoy their presence, cuz they can't live w/you.

horses are beautiful animals in general, but to own one you need to be very rich ! they need a lot or open space and food and then they need to be cleaned and washed and when they sweat, you need to look after them more. but after all, they are so lovely and smart i would have one if i had a bigger garden

Horses by far are the most awesome inspiring animals. While I prefer a dog as a companion, I am always amazed at the power, beauty, and grace of a horse. However, they are high maintenance, expensive, and not practical for all people.
