He's one of the best, or even THE best Justice currently on the Supreme Court. J. P. Stevens stands for what the Constitution really is about - and it is about individuality of every person, based on liberty and responsibility. He is committed to the words that are written on the Supreme Court's building - "Equal Justice Under Law". I wish all future Justices would follow his great example.

This guy got left behind. He is way past his prime and has an undistinguished record. He is a Gerald Ford appointee.

This guy lacks morals like John Kerry lacks good looks.

I love the way this guy both thinks and writes. Easily the most readable of the Court's writers, has the ability to look at cases with a fresh perspective, rather than dogmatically clinging to a liberal or conservative agenda. His unpredicatable decisions are the result of a very consistent manner of legal analysis, which just doesn't happen to be guided by party politics.

Lacks in logic in most of his opinions. Can find anything in the constitution to advance his own personal beliefs and morals or lack thereof.

His opinion on Texas sodomy laws proves just how this guy doesn't have any limits on constitutional rights. If we have a constitutional right to sodomy why not the right to fornicate with children? There is no difference. If you are making up the right to sodomy in the Constitution than you can certainly say the same thing about pologomy and pedophelia. If we want rights we should pass laws, not ask a Court to legislate via judicial fiat. The sodomy laws were stupid, but that's why we have legislators (lawmakers) who can repeal them. Allowing unelectable Courts to do this for us is reckless and a severe threat to the separation of powers.

A liberal opinion in a court whose tendencies reflect a conservative nature. His old age has little hindered a justice whose vitality will endure for a great many years. Unfortunately, his seniority is rarely acknowledged.

One of the few justices who votes only after assessing the facts. Too liberal, you say? FYI, he was nominated to the court by President Gerald Ford, a Republican. Ford felt that the appointment of a moderate would restore credibility to the government after the Watergate fiasco. He origionally started out as a moderate, but during the 80s and early 90s, when Presidents Reagan and Bush stacked the Court with right-wing justices, Stevens migrated to the liberal side of the fence. His sensible choices are based on fairness, constitutionality and best of all, facts. Unlike his colleagues, he has a very out-spoken desire to assess all of the facts before making his final decisions. His recent ruling on the Texas Sodomy Ban proves that he is indeed a man of fairness who realized that the law was an utter disgrace of the constitutional rights of two men to do what they please in the privacy of their own homes. He's right where he belongs- at the top of this list. He judges based on fairness, not on partisanship.
