The best that I have ever seen, but maybe it is because I just loved the Big Red Machine. I was ten years old (am 39 now) when this was played, but it seems that I can still remember it like it was just played. I have to say that I was relieved when the final popup happened and the Reds won. It was an instant classic and lives on 30 years later.

From the ending of Game 6 to the top of the ninth in Game 7, you could see that this Series was dramatic, no question.UPDATE: It was also a great gesture by the Red Sox fans to applaud for both teams after the ballgame. It's too bad someone had to lose.

One of the greatest World Series ever played (I believe the greatest) with the greatest series game as its focal point. Five games were decided by one run, there was controversy, great hitting and masterful pitching. And there was game six, with the Red Sox down three games to two, grabbing an early 3 run lead and then losing it as a tiring Luis Tiant couldn't hold a determined Reds team back. With the game all but gone pinch hitter Bernie Carbo comes to the plate and looks totally overmatched, swinging like a drunk killing wasps with a croquet mallet. Somehow he connects and punches a three run dinger to tie the game. The Sox nearly win it an inning later, but Foster makes a great throw to nail Doyle at the plate. In the eleventh, Evans makes an impossible catch against the right field bull pen and doubles off Griffey. And in the twelfth, Fisk hits the immortal shot off the left field foul pole, and he dances down the line waving it fair. Game 7 was a great game as well, another see-saw battle and was the largest television audience of any game in Series history for many years. This series came at at time when baseball was languishing with fans, and it did much to bring them back to the game.

This is the greatest World Series ever played, by far. When you look at these two lineups and then watch Games 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7, you'll see why. Remember, this is also before George Steinbrenner showed up, too; these weren't a bunch of free agents who were signed to eight year, $100,000,000 contracts. They were all from the farm system or picked up in trades. Now, the games were also good. You had all those home runs in Game 3, with Cincinnati winning 6-5, Game 2, where the Reds made a huge late inning rally to change the momentum in the series completely. Then, of course, you had Game 6. That back up catcher (my memory fails me) on the Red Sox hit an eighth inning, three run homer to tie it up. Then, Dwight Evans made one of the greatest big game catches anyone has ever seen in right field in the twelfth inning. And finally, Carlton Fisk hit that famous foul-pole home run in the bottom of the twelfth. You would have thought that would be enough to win the World Series for Boston, but it wasn't. In Game 7, with the game tied in the top of the ninth, it was Joe Morgan's famous blooper to center that scored Ken Griffey to put the Reds in front 4-3. Even with Yastremski, Rice, Lynn, Evans, Cooper, and a cast of others, the Red Sox couldn't rally in the ninth and were held scoreless for at least the last three innings of that game, I believe. Overall, though, that is what I thought was the greatest World Series of all time.

I've seen highlights of this series. The whole series was great but the greatest game was the sixth in which Fisk saves his team from being beaten with his homer off the foul pole.
