About as token as Mace Windu. He played a crucial part in passing Han and Leia off to Vader and then he helped get them out of the trouble he got them into. Then we went and destroyed the second DEATH STAR.

Obviously the sole black (human) character of any substance in the first three Star Wars installments (in order of release), I doubt that there is any real argument over Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) being created by Lucas in an attempt to answer his critics and appeal to an even wider audience (notwithstanding his claims to the contrary). Williams' relatively weak performance (a least in my opinion) doesn't help matters much in the token department either. With all the different worlds and societies in the Lucas universe, the director could have done much better job at creating roles for African-American actors even with most of the primary characters already being established in the first film. Billy Dee Williams was born April 6, 1937 in New York City.

The single coolest, smoothest character in any of George Lucas's films.

I'm not sure whether or not to label Lando as token. Obviously he is the only black person to be seen in any of the first trilogy and this helps the case of being token. But I personally think that's just how George Lucas imagined him. I'm not convinced he was trying to appeal to any minor demographic.
