 | earthbound (37) 07/18/2005 | A harmless bit of fluff, but as Irish drinking songs go, well below par. For a really good Irish drinking song, you ideally need a healthy dose of injustices perpetrated by the English against the Irish since the year dot. You get bonus points for bringing up the potato famine, if you can. Mentions of alcohol are always smiled upon, and lastly a chorus that is easy to remember so a group of people at varying stages of inebriation can all sing it together. 'The Fields of Athenry' is a fine example, lacking only in the alchohol-related subject matter. 'Whisky in the Jar' is also good, but is a little too upbeat for late at night. The little ditty in question about boys breaking my comb and so on, while it has other virtues, is not really a player when put up against songs bemoaning centuries of tyrannical rule. Also, no mention of booze from beginning to end. Tsk tsk.
