Pitsburgh HOF'er whose standing among the greats of the position has taken a beating since the rise of Bill James and other sabermetrics gurus in the last 20 years or so. A fine defensive third baseman who could hit as well, though his numbers look better than they truly are when one considers that he was playing in a big hitter's era. Still, he was certainly the best N.L 3b of his day in the 20's and 30's.

When I was a kid, he always appeared on all-time all-star lists as the best third-sacker ever. Any reasonable statistical analysis shows this to be nonsense. He isn't close, not only behind those players who came after him, but behind several of his contemporaries. He was a very good player, an adequate bat and a strong hand with the leather.

One of the all-time greats. Needs to be near the top.
