Evers is best known as a member of the famous Tinker to Evers to Chance double play team with the Cubs in the early part of the 20th century. A fiery sparkplug, and part of one of the most dominating teams of all time. He is also remembered as a key member of the "Miracle Braves" of 1914. A Hall of Famer, opinions among baseball writers and fans vary greatly. Some see the trio as vastly overrated, due to the famous Franklin Adams poem about the trio, and others view their defensive stats as nothing fancy. Evers, a tiny but feisty guy nicknamed "The Crab,"only hit 12 homers in his career, and some fail to realize that the average home run leader in those days often hit something like 8 or 9 in a year. His fans scoff at these accusations. I regard him as a worthy Hall member, though certainly not an upper echelon second baseman like Morgan, Hornsby, Eddie Collins, etc.

Look up highly-strung and there's a picture of this nasty little guy. He weighed 125 pounds and he was never more than 10 minutes away from a fist fight with somebody. If an opposing player wasn't handy, he'd take on a team-mate. He did not speak to Cubs shortstop Joe Tinker for several years, despite playing beside him in the infield. He was a Gold Glove fielder before they thought of that award, a good baserunner, and a key part of the great Cubs teams in the early century.
