Not a great hitter, although he had the most important and dramatic world series home run ever, in 1960, by nearly all measures Maz was the best fielding second baseman of all time.

Excellent glove, possibly the best ever at the position and certainly in the top five.

Indifferent hitter, although by no means an automatic out.  His famous dinger to beat the Yankees in the '60 was not the aberration that Bucky Dent's was to beat the Sox in '78.

Awesome fielder, many think that he's the greatest fielder at this position ever. Best remembered for his famous homer in the '60 Series. While he was no Hornsby or Morgan at the plate, he was not just some Mark Belanger type either, he had a decent though by no means great stick too. Made the Hall a few years back, a controversial selection.

i take away one Star b/c he was an average hitter. but in terms of second base ability this man should've been in the HOF years ago. thank goodness for the induction of Ozzie Smith. 7 all star appearances and 8 gold gloves. plus the man was a consistent presence on the field.

Billy Maz, by any objective measure, was the greatest defensive second baseman in history. The most important thing a second-sacker does is turn the double play, and nobody turned more than Maz. Of course he belongs in the HOF-- defense is an integral part of the game and should be recognized. And Maz could hit a bit, too. His stats don't look great because he played in Forbes Field, with its 365-ft left field line. Put him in Fenway, with his short uppercut stroke, and his stats would have looked a lot like Bobby Doerr's. Obviously, as an all-around player, he doesn't compare with people like Morgan, Lajoie, and Hornsby. But defensively, he was second to none!
