Leaving the steroid discussion for another list, Big Mac was nothing special as a first sacker in the field. Didn't do any harm, but wasn't scintillating. When you look at the body of his career, he spent a lot of time injured, and less than fully mobile. Gotta give him someting for all those taters, at least some of which he hit without help, but he's no better than average.

Don't know whether he did 'roids or not.Irishgit is correct to point out that he wasn't much of a fielder. His career numbers look a lot more like Killebrew's or non-1b Reggie Jackson's (and I'm not knocking those guys, who were great) than they do the truly awesome players at that position like Foxx or Gehrig, who I feel were greater players in the context of their times than McGwire was in his. Had a tendency to whiff quite a bit, was injury prone, and put up some Rob Deerian batting averages on several occasions. Still, McGwire did hit some of the most titanic blasts I've ever seen.
