A little bit inconsistent at times, had a strange habit of following up his MVP years with seasons in which he hit .219 or something, (possibly because of injuries?.. can't remember) but an incredibly valuable handler of a great staff, a powerhouse at the plate, and a great arm. A gentleman with a career that also included years in the black leagues, which I give him full credit for, and easily one of the greatest catchers ever.

Should be ranked much higher. A 3-time MVP; for decades, the all-time single-season home run record by a catcher; led the Dodgers to numerous pennants and their first-ever World Series win; great defensive catcher. His career was tragically cut short, but to slightly counter a previous poster, his numbers were on the wane by then.

A truly great defensive catcher with a cannon for an arm and a genius at handling pitchers. More than excellent at the plate as well. Had he played a full career, he might well have pushed Berra and Bench out of the top spots.
