Chuck Berry was there at the beginning of rock and roll. He wrote catchy songs with some excellent lyrics. I especially like "Roll over Beethoven" and "Maybelline". All these years later, they still are welcome bursts of energy.

Chuck Berry was one of the most influential guitarists of all time. Johnny B Goode is a classic, but I have to admit that all of his songs are a bit samey to a degree...

He's simply a true genius of popular music. He invented rock and roll culture and described the U.S.A. in a few lines better than anybody else. He was the first rock songwriter and has established the guitar as the icon of rock. He was too smart to be black in the 50's and he paid for the colour of his skin. For the same things he did a white was judged in a very different way. He would deserve more respect.

Classic, seminal performer, guitarist and songwriter who influenced everyone from the Beatles to the Stones to the Pistols to Joan Jett. Distinct, unique style a combination of charisma, charm and simplicity. Straight up, direct, feel good rock 'n roll with terrific hooks and energy. One of a kind, class act.

He could be a four star but his too many run-ins with the law kind of tarnishes his legendary image.

While he is a classic, some of his songs... Well, he wrote a song called My Ding-a-ling. I can't in good faith give him a fourth star because of this song. I beleive it was supposed to be about a musical instrument, but even if that is true, am I safe in assuming that anybody could take this song out of context? I think so because I found a parody of this song on the internet entitled Good bye Ding-a-ling about John and Lorrena Bobbit.

I like some of Chuck Berrys songs. such as Johnny B. Goode, Rock and Roll Music. He has a fairly good singing voice. but I really like the way he can play a guitar. For the 1950s his guitar music was groundbreaking for Rock N Roll.

He is the king of rock & roll guitar. He paved the way for rock guitarists that came later more than any other rock & roll performer of the 50s. His guitar style was unique and innovative. It is infectuous and stands the test of time. He also wrote his own lyrics and they are total poetry. I can't think of any other rock & roll musician from the 50s that wrote more substantive lyrics than he did. As far as how he is as a person, it seems he has had some problems. And I wish he had never even done that silly 1972 hit. But my high rating of him is based on his talent. He is a rock & roll genius. Some of his best recordings: Johnny B. Goode (1957), Reelin' & Rockin' (1957), School Days (1957), Sweet Little Sixteen (1957), Almost Grown (1959)

Great tunes and lyrics. Too bad recording technology was so primative and someone should have helped him tune his guitar. Classic Rock, not R&B.

Sorry, Chuck wrote some great songs, but I wouldn't say he was any better than an average guitarist and an okay singer.

Awwwright! One of the guys that started it all. So many later rockers did songs by this creative original.

A powerful vocalist "My Ding-a-Ling" is a funny song as well as the classic "Johnny B. Goode."

Chuck is such a pioneer in music. He took so many different sounds and brought them together to contribute greatly to rock and roll. One of the best of the 50's. Go, Johnny, Go!!

Chuck Berry has to be one of the most influential guitarists, as well as being a generally fantastic rock 'n' roller. His style of guitar-playing is completely unique, and his ability to formulate so many excellent different songs whilst using the 'standard' rock 'n' roll chord pattern always amazes me.
