Behind only Bench amongst N.L.catchers of the era, that is, until the rise of Gary Carter. Somewhat unfairly overshadowed by Bench, who was indeed greater. A terrific hitter with a long career, though no great shakes defensively, and he has a reasonable Hall of Fame case.
