Ernie Lombardi 4

Great hitter, a powerful guy, but very, very slow. Had a sad life, attempted suicide in his later years.

Ernie Lombardi 4

Ernie Schnozz Lombardi was one of the purest hitters ever to don the tools of ignorance. A lifetime .306 hitter and a 2-time batting champion who hit as high as .342 in 1938 (was also MVP) that year. From a batting standpoint, he hit just as good as Pudge Rodriguez or Javy Lopez. He had power, hitting as many as 20 homers in a season. Though he had 8 career steals, my grandmom must have been catching because they say he was the slowest man to make the baseball Hall of Fame -- even slower than the umpires and Abner Doubleday. He led the league in GIDPs 4 times. Many hard-hit would-be singles into rightfield and even centerfield ended up being ground outs as outfielders occasionally could make the throw to beat Lombardi to first. He was a solid defensive backstop, but suffered the stigma of the infamous play in the 1939 World Series where King Kong Keller collided into him and Lombardi (who was basically out on his feet) laid motionless as two more Yankees scored and clinched the World Series. The incident was called The Schnooz's Snooze and may have denied him entry into the Hall of Fame until after his death.
