Started out wielding a good stick with Pittsburgh, but by the time he made it to Boston he was an atrocious hitter with very poor plate discipline and tons of groundouts and double plays. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a hitter chase so many balls out of the strike zone, and he wasn't a good bad ball hitter like Berra or Vlad either. Still, he had a sunny disposition as a player, was always a fine fielder, and did a very good job as manager of the '03 Royals, especially considering what he had to work with.

i watched Tony Pena playing in PIttsburgh until Syd Thrift pulled that stroke of genius and got rid of him for Van Slyke, Mike Lavaliiere and Mike Dunne. I always thought Pena was ok, a mediocre talent on some junk ballclubs. played a good offense but nothing above and beyond what you'd expect from your day to day catcher.
