For seven straight years he was probably the best power hitter in the National League, winning the home run title while playing for the hapless Pirates.
Nothing special in the field and a brief (albeit luminous) career knocks off a star, but he belongs near the top of this list.

Sometimes criticized as a lumbering slugger or a Hall mistake because his career was brief. That's balderdash, because he led the league in homers SEVEN straight years, with dreadful Pirates clubs to boot. Noted for his malapropisms as a Met announcer, he also played briefly with Cleveland. Not the greatest left fielder ever, but hardly Roland Office, he was simply great at his peak, despite the brevity of his career.
