Jim Rice 4

An immensely strong man, Rice frequently broke bats checking his swing.  A feared and fearsome power hitter, Rice was certainly helped by hitting at Fenway, but at his peak could have hit the ball out of any park, except maybe Yellowstone.

The third of the chain of great Red Sox left fielders that starts with Williams, moves to Yaz, and is currently with Ramirez

Jim Rice 4

One of the strongest players of my lifetime. Eventually became a competent left fielder. While he was indeed helped by his home park, he was capable of smashing the ball out of any ballpark in the game. In recent years, he is sometimes belittled by sabermetric researchers and others, and his numbers, on the surface, pale in comparison to some of the guys in more recent years. However, he won an MVP in '78, though I think Guidry deserved it that year, and was the most feared hitter in the A.L. in the late 70's. I mean, that dude looked SCARY at the plate. Led the league in homers 4 times and hit a lot of triples sometimes too. His last good year was in '86, then he rapidly declined, in large part due to weakened eyesight, before retiring in 89, having played his entire career with Boston: he's among the greatest Red Sox hitters ever. His best chance to make the Hall is this year, and despite his sometimes surly personality, which has mellowed considerably since, I think that his dominance from the mid 70's through the mid 80's, coupled with the juicing accusations of later players, may finally convince the voters that he indeed merits that honor. After all, he led the league at one time or another in 12 different hitting categories.
