The greatest finesse pitcher of the past 30 years. Great command and control, remarkable understanding of what specific hitters can't hit. Excellent at changing speeds. Fields his position extremely well. Very competitive in nature, disciplined and always well-prepared for his starts. Of course, in the past few years he's become a 6-7 inning starter, but that's mostly due to advancing age and the fact that he's not physically imposing (only 6-0, about 185). A perfect example of how smarts and mechanics can take you farther than a 100 mph fastball. Once again, Rich Davis doesn't know what he's talking about, making typical one-line put-down judgments without any supporting evidence whatsoever. Spare us, please. Maddux is at the threshold of winning 300 games, a feat only something like 22 pitchers have done in the history of the game, and quite a few of those guys pitched at a time when the level of hitting talent wasn't what it is today. Hence, Maddux does rank well up there, and his win total will most surely increase, as he should be able to pitch for another two or three seasons.

Maddox is a great pitcher but doesn't deserve to be in the top 10.

I used to watch him pitch and wonder how he was doing it. He made it look effortless, his fastball was nothing special, his junk wasn't astonishing, and he wasn't an intimidator. But he could think far ahead of the batter, he had pinpoint control, and he could win.
