No other pitcher ever accounted for nearly half (46%) of his team's wins, when he won 27 games for the last-place (59-97) 1972 Phillies.15 game win streak; last pitcher to win over 25 games; last pitcher to throw over 300 innings in a season.

Complete weirdo, but amazing numbers even if he held on a few years too long. . .devastating slider. . .won 27 games in one season for an atrocious Phillies team that won 58ish games ALL YEAR. . ."Lefty" was amazing when he was on his game. . .wasn't an automatic out at the plate, either. . .

The end was ugly, bouncing from club to club. Hated sportswriters, and was something of an Anti-Semite, among his bizarre quirks were talking about the ludicrous Anti-Jewish tract "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion." Not a likeable guy at all, but a hell of a pitcher from an objective standpoint. Among his many accomplishments -27 wins for a team that finished last with 59 in a year (72) that saw an eight game strike.A HOF 300 game winner who ranks very high in career strikeouts.

Greatest LEFTY of his time. I watched him pitch many times. He drew many a large crowd when the Phillies drew very little. His games were close to perfection. What a slider that man had. 26-9 for a last place team and 4 Cy Youngs. Much better than Sandy Koufax. Should be number one on this list!

Carlton was the best lefty in THAT period in baseball. MAYBE the best of all time, though It would be interesting to see how good Randy could have done in that period before juiced batters became rampant.

He was a great pitcher, back in a time when I was more of a baseball fan than I am now. I still remember how he went 26-9 one year while the Phillies were in last place. Imagine what his record could have been like if the rest of the Phils had played like they should?

Lefty was phenominal.. one of the best pitchers I ever saw. He, unlike many other HOF pitchers, made MANY HOF batters look silly at the plate. I saw guys like Pops Stargell, McCovey, Bench, Dave Parker, etc. walk away from the plate looking completely beffudled after facing him. He, as much as as Schmidt, was the key to those great Phillies teams of the 70s and 80s.

sorry Sandy, your six good years aren't enough.....Lefty was as certain as the sun but was wasted in Philly

If he had played on some better teams his total numbers would have challenged anyone's. The guy could fool just aboutanyone when he was on.
