Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861). An astute scholar, Browning was reading Homer and Greek by age 10, and had written her first epic poem by age 19. Though supportive to the point of patronage, Browning’s father would not let her marry. In 1845 Browning married Robert Browning and the couple fled to Italy, where they supported Italian unity. Browning also championed social reform and the role of women in literature. Browning is best known for Aurora Leigh and Sonnets from the Portuguese. (Add picture)

(Subjectively) had a greater body of work than her husband. Mainly remembered for her Sonnets for the Portugese (including How Do I Love Thee) although she did have many under-valued poems.

Superior poet to her overrated husband. Portuguese Sonnets were very good.

An intensely introspective invalid spinster, shut in and dominated at home by her overbearing father(some of you may have seen the 1934 film The Barretts of Wimpole Street in which he's played by Charles Laughton?),constantly in pain and wearing black, her faithful dog her main comfort- suddenly her life was transformed by the great Victorian poet Robert Browning, with whom she eloped to Italy and then married.Much of her poetry concentrates on her ecstatic love for him;"How do i love thee?Let me count the ways./I love thee to the depth and breadth and height/My soul can reach...".Though some of her poems are considered a little dated in style, there are many to treasure.
