Apia is the capital of Samoa located on the northern coast of Upolu Island. Apia is the economic, social, and political center of the country. Apia is also Samoa’s only port and city. Exports include bananas, copra, and cocoa. A major site in Apia is Mulin’u, the old ceremonial capital of the Samoan Kingdom. Robert Louis Stevenson lived in Apia the last four years of his life, and is buried on Mt. Vaea, at a point that overlooks his home and the entire city. The estimated population of Apia is 38,000 residents. (Add picture)

Apia is a little pit of a town with dirty sewers clogged throughout the city and packs of mangey flee-ridden dogs wandering all over the place. But the people are the friendliest you will find anywhere in the world. Every morning the police begin the day parading down the street (most of them in lava-lavas and barefoot) to the government building where they raise the flag. If you get to Samoa do not stay in Apia or even the island of Upolu. Make sure you get out to the other islands especially Savai'i. A true traditional, undeveloped, island paradise awaits you just outside Apia's citys limits so make sure you explore while you're there.

When I was there, way back in 1977, it was my first ever trip to a tropical island. It really fit my image of what the tropics should look like. Stay at Aggie Grey's if you get a chance. It was well worth the price.
