05/11/2006 | Genseric was the first barbarian to strike by sea. The Roman Empire had survived earlier barbarian raids thanks to its North African hinderland, which provided Rome's food supply. Between Julius Cesar's extermination of Mediterranean pirates and Genseric-roughly 500 years, the Mediterranean was Rome's heartland. Once the Vandals invaded North Africa, however, the Western Roman empire was doomed.
