The Roman Empire had survived earlier barbarian raids thanks to its North African hinderland, which provided Rome's food supply. Between Julius Cesar's extermination of Mediterranean pirates and Genseric-roughly 500 years, the Mediterranean was Rome's heartland. Once the Vandals invaded North Africa, however, the Western Roman empire was doomed.
