The first Scotsman to have a recorded identity. The Roman historian Tacitus described the battle fought by Julius Agricola, where he defeated an army of tall red haired men with long swords and round shields. Calgacus' army was slaughtered in the defeat, and his own fate is uncertain, but his fierce defiance of the Romans: "They make a desert, and they call it peace!" began the long brawl of Scottish history.

Calach made enough of an impression on me that I based my first historical novel - The Pict - on my imagination of how his life (and the 'battle' of Mons Graupius) might have been. -Jack Dixon
