This one was a victim of time the 6 or so years that passed since the making of Winds of War were tough on 2 of the returning players. Mitchum was arguably to old when he made Winds he was obviously to old for this one, Polly Bergen fared no better. Then replaced the players for Byron, Natalie and Arron and it never affected the stories continuity so why in heavens name did they not do the same for Mitchum & Bergen. While on this theme the so beautiful Victoria Tennant who stunned in Winds had lost much of her freshness to remain the same adorable Pam Tudsbury for W&R, 6 years had passed in real time but the theme of W&R was supposed to flow smoothly & seamlessly in the story line, it missed again. The film values of Winds were outstanding, but the period and locals covered in W&R were just to daunting for the CGI of the time and the battle scenes are shallow & the time lines to long for a tv movie of the time.I like this film & it has the best depiction of the horrors of the Holocaust ever filmed. The evil of Auschwitz & the Nazi regime is brilliantly displayed in W&R far better then the mini-series the Holocaust. The horrors of Sammy's work gang in Auschwitz & the Ukraine almost allows the viewer to experience the stench & decay endured by so many millions under Nazi rule. However, it does not measure up to Winds and cool heads & reason should have prevailed and breathed new life into the project by replacing the entire cast not just 50% of it.

Based on a pretty good novel this series was a dissapointment for me. And Robert Mithum who I enjoyed in much older films just phoned in his performance. Totally wooden acting! The story was fairly well told but it seemed to drag in many places. Ponderous.

Despite the title, eminently forgettable.

Producer Dan Curtis improved upon "Winds of War" by bringing in Jane Seymour as Natalie and Hart Bochner as her husband in "War and Remembrance." Ali McGraw was too "in-your-face" in the prequel. John Gielgud was magnificent as Aaron Jastrow and far better than an apparently ailing John Houseman. Photography in War and Remembance was not quite as sharp as the earlier production. I own both sets of DVDs.
