 | ready2shop (0) 07/31/2008 | The Food Basics at 2131 Lawrence Ave east is especially bad....I would highly discourage anyone from shopping there.
A good friend worked there for several weeks and there are serious sanitary issues with this place.

 | beng333 (0) 02/18/2008 | Some standard packaged items are cheaper. The store, in general, is of inferior quality, and many of the prices are non competative.
Fruits & Vegetables are expensive compared to Hamilton Produce and Lococo. The quality of fruits is poor, fruits on the shelf are raw and frozen and become bruised and remain raw when left out for 4-7 days. Some of the generic no name store bagged products are of inferior quality eg breaded chicken burgers $10 bag has about 90% bread and 10% chicken -- expensive bread!!!

 | bufffuzz (0) 12/05/2006 | Food Basics has been relaunched and the results are truly amazing. Fresh produce stacked high to move out. tasty breads, choice meats, great prices. yes, you do pack your own, but I do that anyway.
Because the prices are so low, Food basics does not double couposn like other A&P family supermarkets. But if you don't mind shopping from half of the products found in your typical A&P, this friendly chain is for you. VIVA USA VIVA FOOD BASICS.

 | Willie A. (0) 01/28/2005 | The Food Basics in my area are great. Basically, it's a no frills version of the already popular Farmer Jack or A&P stores but promises lower prices because of a few missing frills such as baggers or the deli counters. But I dont care because their prices are so low. Who cares if you have to bag your own groceries and pay ten cents for each large heavy duty bag.Your're still saving lots of money. Plus they caring name brand foods along with the store brand America's Choice. It's not no name crap which is sold at other no frill stores such as Aldi or Sav-a-Lot. Not to mention the fresh food.Three cheers for Food Basics! Finally who cares about paying a 25 cent deposit for a cart when you save so much and get it back when you get done shopping!!!

 | Bubba2000 (0) 10/20/2004 | I just moved to a different city, but the food basics that I once decided to shop in at my old city was dirty. I couldn't belive that you had to pay a quarter to use a cart. My old store I use to shop at put censors on the wheels, and if you went out of the lot with the cart, it would lock the wheels so they could not move. That worked very well, for they would no longer be useful.I also could not belive you have to pay for a grocery bag. Where I come from you did not pay a cent, and they would bag your grocery's for you.Overall though they do have fair prices, which is always good.So I guess I will check the Food Basics in my new city.

 | sba1956queen (0) 10/09/2004 | I am in love with the new Food Basics stores just introduced to the Detroit area. I never really been a fan of no frills stores like Sav-a-Lot, but Food Basics have showed me the difference between them other no frills stores.NAME BRANDS at LOW PRICES!

 | Mr.Political (18) 10/01/2004 | The selection is average, as is the cleanliness, customer service, line length, lighting, etc. The prices are pretty low but Shop Rite is cheaper. What really turns me off is that you have to BUY your grocery bags (okay their ten cents each but still..)!

 | ahoyboy (0) 09/15/2004 | This is the way low price grocery shopping should be. Name brands, great selection, major savings. No nonsense without the cluttered isles of non grocery items found in that dirty super mega place, W*mart. Shoppers have bonded here and have become loyal shoppers, either in Canada or the States. This concept has caught on and should be spreading into Buffalo and other major cities in the coming months.

 | blueberry (0) 08/26/2004 | This is a great store... the produce is good quality at the best price around here and like the other said they also have name brand food and not just crap.
By the way... the quarter for the carts is so not because the carts get stolen but it is so they don't have to pay someone to go out and collect all of the carts, and you get your quarter back anyway when you return the cart... That is the whole purpose.

 | kellyb2 (0) 07/25/2004 | The new store concept is a complete joke. Are you telling me that I have to give a 25 cent deposit on a cart, yes I know that carts are stolen, but let me tell you the cost of carts is part of the cost of having a grocery store. Yes we know shoplifters cost the store money too but does that mean that I have to give them a deposit when I go into the store and can have it back when I leave and haven't stolen anything. No frills doesn't mean that you pay for the carts, yes it's a quarter but it's the point. Why don't I pay their electricity bill too, or is that not built into the cost of products either. I don't shop at Food Basics or Farmer Jacks because obviously their management needs to understand what Operating Costs are!!
