Oddly, I don't know much about Magellan other than that he was speared to death in the Phillipines. I should probably read up on this guy a little bit, huh? I'm hopeful that I won't emulate my namesake in the way I die - a spear through the gut doesn't sound that appealing.

When Leif Ericsson,Columbus,Henry Hudson and the boys played cards, they never won. They could not beat the straights of Magellan. lol.Seriously, exploration in general was a great thing. How can one rate any of these people less than 5?Thanks to these folks,we found out about new places and things.Circumnavigation is cool, but even the more "mundane" explorers helped open up new parts of the world to us.It also took personal courage for these explorers to do what they did.

Circumnavigation. It doesn't get any better than that; even though he didn't make it.

The first man to successfully initiate the circumnavigation of the world, and although he did not make the whole journey, he can be credited for being brave enough to try to do so. Navigation changed for the world during the times of Magellan, one of the greatest explorers and adventurers ever.

Discovered the Phillipenes, then died. He personally never circumnavigated around the world, but one of his ships did.

Magellan's fleet accomplished quite a feat in the 1520's. Sailing around the globe in the types of ships they had during that period was difficult at best. He was killed by natives along the way in the Philippines; that's the problem with the unknown, you don't really know what awaits on the other side. It was a great thing that some of the sailors survived, otherwise, the Pacific would have probably been called something else. Magellan named it because he thought the Atlantic was the more turbulent sea and the Pacific was the peaceful one, hence the name.
