It's funny that a tax and spend liberal wins on this issue. Let's replace the free-spending president with a guy who really knows how to spend, would owe his very soul to liberal groups and doesn't have a cushy relationship with the US military. We probably don't need the military, so brilliant is Kerry, we'll just tell our allies they can foot the bill for our safety for a while. But did he ever return, no he never returned, and his fate is still un-learned . . .he may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston, he's the man who never returned . . .

Actually Bush has managed to turn this into an issue. Although Bush has increased non-defense discretionary spending by nearly 30%, he has managed to make Kerry into a tax and spend liberal. Don't get me wrong, Bush and Kerry are both big tax and spenders--the age of big government is back. The only difference would be their priorities, Kerry would centralize costs in the government through his health care plan and other social policies; Bush would continue his Keynesian economic policies based on military spending, corporate welfare and higher tariffs. This really gives advocates of a smaller, more responsive and responsible government no where to turn to.

Government revenues have to come from somewhere, and taxes are a pretty good place to start. The problem isn't that taxes are too high, it's that they are spent on the wrong things. Also, Bush would have to be pretty stupid (even more so than he already is) to attack Kerry for this. Taxing and spending are preferable to throwing money that doesn't even exist down the drain. Deficits and public debt are not that big a deal when they are kept to a reasonable level, and are even good for the economy in a lot of ways, but Bush's current deficit is the largest in history and they have absolutely no plans to get the country out of it. None. They don't care because it's not going to be their grandchildren that are going to have to pay for it. Kerry is an opportunistic twit but the term 'tax and spend' implies that he at least has a fiscal policy not completely based on unverified ideology and conjecture.

I think Bush's spending habits would make make a tax and spend liberal proud. As 'tax and spend' may actually be favorable to 'spend and don't tax,' it is likely that Bush will not choose to make this a battle ground.
