I only know about this guy through “Rage to Live,” a book about Richard Burton that paints Speke as a whiny, foolish, weak tag-along who blundered into a situation that let him claim to have discovered the source of the Nile. If even half of the stuff in “Rage to Live” is true, Speke doesn’t even deserve to be on this list.
