Modest and unassuming, the legendary Tenzing Norgay never craved the spotlight. And though he plays second fiddle in history to the great Sir Edmund Hillary, if it wasn't for Norgay, Hillary would have never made it to the top of Mt. Everest. But these two men accomplished what so many failed to do before them (including George Mallory and Eddie Irvine). And as far as who made it to the top of the world first between Hillary and Norgay, Norgay admitted it was Hillary who first set afoot on the top. However, Norgay once famously said "If it is a shame to be the second man on Mount Everest, then I will have to live with this shame." Nevertheless, this unassuming man deserves as much credit as Hillary as both men "knocked the bastard off."

Here’s a guy who doesn’t get enough attention. He reached the summit of Everest along with Sir Edmund Hillary, but instead of being hailed as half the team that made it there first, he’s just the Sherpa who helped Hillary. His name should be as well-known as Hillary’s, and it just isn’t. The Sherpas are pretty amazing in general. Generation after generation of living in the Himalayas has changed their physiology to the point where they’re much better adapted to high altitudes, making them the world’s best mountaineers.
