To be the first European to establish a trade route to India by sea in the early 16th century was, for its time, as great an achievement as sending men to the moon in the late 20th century. In the epic poem "The Lusiads," da Gama is celebrated in what is generally regarded as the greatest single piece of literature in the Portuguese language - a distinction without parallel in the annals of the Age of Discovery.

One of the greatest explorers ever. He artfully rounded the Cape of good Hope. The first recoreded trip to do this ever. Made Portugal proud.

He made it around Africa for the first time giving its name The Cape of Good Hope.
