One of the few really good Japanese movies, made shortly after WWII (1948) when Japan was mostly rubble. Good depiction of the poverty and devastation of post-war Japan. Surprsingly good acting as well. Japanese actors are generally mediocre at best; but the actors playing the main characters in Drunken Angel (an alcoholic doctor and a TB-infected thug) are great. Closer to Italian neo-realist cinema than the Samurai dramas of Kurosawa's later work.

Good, but not one of Kurosawa's best. I'd give it a 4.5. You can find an interesting analysis of the positive and negative aspects of Post-war western influence on Japan here. An interesting perspective on how self-destructive machismo can be seen also in the potrayal of a sauve gangster who embarks down a spiral staircase of self-destruction simply to save face. As the sarcastic alchaholic doctor in the film says Why do we make sacrifices for such silly things?. This is what Kurosawa refers to as his first real film and it is evident that his incredible directing style is being formed here.
