Edison made some major contributions, such as the light bulb and the phonograph, but while he was an inventor, a business man and maybe even an engineer, it's rather a stretch to call him a scientist. Edison wasn't so much interested in how things worked, he just wanted to find things that did work.

This guy stole more patents than he actually, genuinely came up with. Was notable in that he took credit for virtually every discovery and invention that came out of his laboratory, the majority of which, it appears, were the work of someone else. Edison's greatest gift was his talent of self-promotion and hookwinking the public. He did come up with a number of breakthroughs early on, but after 1880, this guy's career was largely a sham. Also, the general public recognizes Edison as the inventor of this and that, but the truth is that several of his "inventions" were no more than improvements on devices that other inventors all over the world had been tinkering with: Edison got the historical recognition in large part because of his ability to come up with the most efficient and workable versions of various devices, and his garnering for himself the financial benefits from commercializing his "inventions." More of a greedhead capitalist than an inventor, actually.

Thomas Edison was a great inventor who taught us, by example, to never give up. His work with the lightbulb was one failure after another, but he never became discouraged. He said every failure was a discovery, because he then knew one more thing that didn't work.
