It is a battle flag from 1775 . Blue is for the color of the uniform . The crescent was a symbol on their caps. And the palmetto was added later after their defense of a palmetto log fort on Sullivan island.

It's an improvement over the old crap symbol that until recently flew over the Capitol of that toilet bowl state, a banner that the redneck subhumans vigorously sought to protect, namely, the good ol' Stars and Bars. Symbol of subjugation, institutionalized racism, slavery and gross treason. Yeah, that's a "heritage" to be proud of. This eyesore looks like the wrapping on a package of Turkish cigarettes.

Cool! Almost looks pagan. Even Muslim.

This is the great historical palmetto flag and is in the top ten of all state flags for design. It must be 150 years old.

It looks like a beach towel.

Is everybody sure that's a cresent moon and a palm tree ? It looks like a floating eyeball staring at a long legged peacock to me.

Pretty, simply stated, and absolutely unique.

Like all of the great state flags (Texas, California), the South Carolina flag was designed as a flag for an independent country. Better than most national flags.

LOL mr. political, you are correct, it doesnt look like it represents a state in the union, because it doesn't we're talking about south carolina, they still haven't realized they lost yet!!!!

Come on people- do you all really believe this flag deserves to be number one on this list? Or are you all from South Carolina? Look at that thing! It has a nice background and I like the contrast in colors but the thing looks more like a something you'd find burried in the back room of a dollar store rather than as a representative of one of the states in the Union!!

Absolutely gorgeous as state flags go. It almost looks like it stand in as the flag for a more tropical, islamic destination, but you can't deny its visual appeal. Plus, it doesn't have lettering and it is still original enough to easily recognize.

I love the flag of my new home state. Beautiful!

It looks more like a Mideastern flag than a Southern one. But that's okay; I think the Mysterious East aspect they're going for is neat.

I'm from Alabama, but I love the South Carolina flag. It is a pure, simple and intriguing design. As soon as I saw it for the first time, I had to go check out the history behind it!

Gotta love the palm tree. Too cool.

A very beautiful flag, no matter how simple it looks.

Striking in its simplicity and makes good use of local symbols.. the palmetto and crescent moon.
