not bad. crowded and overly touristy. However, you can come across bars/restaurtants indiginous to the neighborhood that no tourist soul has touched, that has secret smoking rooms, and serves thin crust pizza old world style. or, be a tourist and check out all the cool little streets, bring a guide book and see where famous and infamous mobsters hung around

I used to be a semi-regular here, but find myself going less and less with the passage of time and the gentrification of nearly every urban neighborhood in the NY-NJ area. It was never cheap to dine here, but now between tolls, parking, and eating, you need to come equipped with a small fortune in order to enjoy yourself. A nice piece of NY history still, but this really isn't the place to come anymore if you're an epicurean. Has become extremely and distastefully touristy. My hang-out used to be Luna's, which I believe is still on Mulbery Street, although I haven't eaten there in years. It was here that mobster Crazy Joe Gallo (immortalized in the Bob Dylan song "Joey") used to conduct "business" and was arrested in 1962 for extortion. They used to have the best veal parmigiana I ever ate in my life, and tons of genuine "Old-World" atmosphere. Across the street was Umberto's, where Gallo was shot to death in true movie-gangster fashion 10 years after his arrest at Luna's. This, too, was way overpriced (I used to bring my dates here on the rare occasions when I had a lot of cash), but they had a great linguine with calamari and hot sauce. When it closed, the wall still contained some of the bulletholes from the Gallo hit. Ah...memories! For those with more prosaic tastes, Vincent's was around the corner, and seemed to attract a large number of celebrities. It still may...again, I haven't been there in years. Down the street was Ferrara's, which served some of the best, most-expensive Italian pastries I've ever eaten (I shook hands with Tony Danza here once; he impressed me as a very friendly, gracious guy). The Ravenite Club, which used to be headquarters for John Gotti, is now a cigar store, I believe. I passed here once when one of Gotti's co-defendants was sitting outside. He must have seen that I recognized him, and maybe thought I was about to approach him for an autograph, because he gave me a look that should have stopped my heart on the spot. Needless to say, that was one autograph I was willing to do without. If you're in the neighborhood, stop in and have a cigar in memory of Johnnyboy...

Love the restaurants on Mulberry Street. On Sundays, they close off the street to vehicular traffic to use a pedestrian mall. A lot of fun.

Like many old ethnic neighborhoods in the U.S., NYC's Little Italy has shrunk and become something of a tourist show. (Chinese immigrants own most of the buildings in Little Italy and the "Italian" businesses just rent.) Nonetheless, there is no where better than NYC's Little Italy if you want real Italian cooking!

There is nothing like Little Italy for cultural events or to find the greatest food in the world. Exquisite restaurants, excellent desserts, and enjoyable cultural events. A great place to be in the Big Apple.
