Steve Martin is no Spencer Tracy

I thought it was pretty good. Steve Martin does another good job of mixing sophisticated humor with a hint of his classic silliness. For someone that never had children, Martin plays a great father.

I agree that both are entertaining films. They are also a study in two polar opposite eras (well, Hollywood's version of them anyway). The 50's version was all hats, white gloves and Miss Manners upper middle class propriety. The comedy was good but much more subtle and refined. The new version, while still on the somewhat snooty side of upper middle class, has a much more relaxed feeling about it. Steve Martin does a great job as the neurotic father and I actually prefer him to Spencer Tracy's version. Overall, I think both had decent casts, were well written and are of equal entertainment value. Sometimes it helps to wait a generation or more to offer another interpretation.

I happen to like them both. In this case I think the original holds up quite well and is still a relavent movie. The remake also stands alone due to the hilarious role of Steve Martin and his interactions with Diane Keaton and the Daughter whose name I can't recall right now.The scenes between father and daughter literaly bring tears to your eyes, especially if you are a father of daughters. Both movies rate a five.

I didn't realize this movie was a remake, but it's my favorite romantic comedy. Steve Martin is perfect for this role with his exaggerated facial expressions and whining.

I just adore this movie. Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams are hilarious and perfectly casted. Perhaps a little on the sappy side, it's undeniably sweet and funny- a great remake.
