i agree cliff was the only one who ever made a name for himself... like the band did but not james or kirk or lars as an individual... Cliff is known as one of the greatest bass players of all time

This order sucks! By far and away the most talented musician Metallica ever had was Cliff Burton. He has proved can play guitar solos on the bass better then Hemmett can on the guitar. Even though all 3 albums he's in have poor production in most parts, listen to Orion, Pulling Teech (Anasthesia) and parts of The Thing that should not be for class bass playing in studio. Live however was where Burton found his feet, away from bass free sound quality. He plays numerous and incredible bass solos on most of my live albums in the years 1983-6 (obviously) and for anyone who's seen the MTV video of For Whom the Bell Tolls can see what i mean by Burton playing guitar solos by finger on a four string bass! Amazing...
