He is the vine, we are the branches. as long as we are attached to the vine, we will be able to bear fruits, and because the vine is good, our fruits will likewise be good. But, if we are separated from the vine, not only we will be unable to bring any fruits, but will wither and die, because the life that flows through the nutrients from the roots through the vine through the branches is severed. Our life, our true life, flows from the life that Jesus is.

Christ compares Himself to a vine and compares us to the branches; we are to "bear fruit" as "branches."
