If you mean real as in his divinity, miracles, and resurrection, then that has to be taken on faith alone of course since there is no way to prove/disprove this.

However, he is real in that almost all historians (even skeptical athiest) agree on these bare minimum facts - Jesus got crucified by Pontius Pilate, John baptized Jesus, Jesus was a rabbi that spoke in parables (secular historians rule most of the parables as unreliable but except a.) mustard seed/faith b.) kingdom of god c.) turn the other cheek and d.) love your enemies), also secular historians (most of them) agree Jesus had a brother James.

Here are some links/proof below.

1.) an anti-christian site (that promotes atheism and makes the gospels mostly false) that even has to admit Jesus's crucifixion because it is historically undeniable below.

http://www.geocities.com/paulntobin/crucifixionhistory.html

2.) Here is an online skeptical/scientific encyclopedia that argues for the existence of Jesus.

http://skepticwiki.org/index.php/Historical_Jesus

3.) Here is an unbiased website from a university that studies the historical jesus.

http://blue.butler.edu/~jfmcgrat/jesus/index.html

Also if you look up on non-christian historians for the first and second century you'll see they mention the persecution of early christians (mostly from pagans). Look up on Josephus, Tacitus, Pliny, Lucian of Somosata, and etc.

Tacitus (a pagan historian) mentions christians in a derrogatory tone and it's founder jesus (where he mentions him being crucified) as a pernicious (or wicked ) cult deserving of punishmnet. So it's this unlikey this passage is forged by a christian or made up. There are others in the 1st and second century that also mentions jesus.

Hope this helps.

Look at the Jews, and the history of the Jews, that's enough evidence right there to prove Jesus was the son of God, and He was foretold in the old testament, and besides, the bible has proven it self anyways, the problem is people scoff it, reject it, think it's "funny", sealing their doom.

There is more historical documented proof that He is real, much more than of many other historical figures that we take for granted they were real.

I know He's real through faith! Jesus Himself tells us that blessed are those who have not seen and yet still believe. These forums are terrible. Christ should not be the brunt of some sick persons idea for the type of garbage on this site!!

I don't have even one piece of evidence to prove to you that he is real but when I prayed to him my life changed so much that I know in my own heart that he's real.

Even the most skeptical historians say he was a real person. Beyond that, decide for yourselves what this man Jesus is for you. I hope you choose wisely.

Even those folks who don't follow Jesus in the context of faith or religion would have a hard time making a case that a man named Jesus did not walk the Earth. Admittedly, I don't know too many people who do not view Jesus as some kind of a religious figure but even they are willing to accept him as a philosopher or teacher. I believe it would be impossible for this to be some kind of a conspiracy meant to keep him in the forefront of Christianity had he not actually existed. Personally I have chosen to explore Jesus from a spiritual standpoint and at least in my own life a connection has been made between the spiritual and the physical, so for me it's an open and shut case. However I also think that one doesn't have to believe in Jesus on a personal level to figure out at one time a man named Jesus walked the Earth and had followers. I just don't see how a conspiracy or a make believe figure could last for something like 2000 years without completely falling apart. Even if one is an atheist they are not compromising their philosophy by admitting he existed in a physical sense. How far you wish to take it after that is up to you.

Well historical records say he's real for one, but there is no direct proof he is the son of God, but there is no proof he is NOT the son of God.

Jesus and God did not put people through Hell, that is an uniformed judgement, the Bible says Satan puts people through Hell.

Traderboy, here is one little thing you overlook in Scripture: the "Father of Lies" cannot create life, he can only destroy it. The Pharasees put this same question to Jesus and He answered quite simply. A house divided against itself cannot stand. If He was Satan, and was doing miracles that work against Satan, then how does Satan have any power? I never once saw any instance in Scripture where Satan could create life, only destroy it. When Satan was allowed to play god with Job's life, he made it a living nightmare of sickness and death. It was God who restored everything Satan took away. It is God who took our sin away and gave us new life through Christ's death and resurrection. Satan has no power to do that. All he knows is to rape, to kill, and to destroy. He has no power to restore health, only to take it away. He has no power to give, only to take away. He has no power to rise from death. Only God can create life and make it grow.

One of the better questions on this list. Exhaustive research into Rabbi Y'shua's non-Biblical, earthly blandishments have turned up such a dirty swirl of legendary insertions and forgeries that one can only wince in unsettling awe at what's been laid bare. From the early "church fathers" and their tinkerings with the works of Josephus, to the unfounded assumptions of Talmudic references, Tertullian, Justin, Pliny Secundus, and Thallus, there has yet to be found one shred of independent proof that verifies the tangible existence of the Jesus of history. The spiritual Jesus is an even bigger obstacle, made more labyrinthine by the very book that chronicles his exploits. Most would use the shadowy "divine powers" of Jesus as proof of his intercessory works within the lives of believers; the Bible, however, states that Satan (and his minions) are more than capable of performing signs, wonders, and miracles (Matthew 24:23-24, 2nd Thessalonians 2:8-9, Revelation 16:14, and Deuteronomy 13:1-3). So, the greater questions become: how tough would it have been to have fooled a beleaguered bunch of first-century peasant farmers (or anyone else, for that matter)? How do you know that Jesus wasn't Satan in disguise? The "Father Of Lies" may yet be "putting one over" on us with the subtlety of a bargain-basement magician.

We dont. This topic will always end up reflecting the fact that God is a product of faith, nothing else. His existance is there because you choose he is. As I read all here, the answer that hits closest to home with me is "Orange Charlies"..well said whoever you are. Im am not a bible scholar at all. I have not even read the whole book. Yes, I am a product of devout Catholic parents who brainwashed me as a child. As an adult, some parts of my faith have remained while some concepts I have recognized as what they are. A product of HUMAN interpretation that I dont accept. What I know is that and the end of the line there are days, minutes or even moments when I see hear or experience something that I believe is only a message or a gift from the higher being that gave me life. The fact that my parents made love and it brought forth my life as it is today, is a Miracle. This miracle happens thousands of times a day and as an intellignet race, we take it for granted because we know the scientific reasons that make it happen. But who knows why??!! Trying to answer that takes a different point of view. Why do we live and die, and why are we aware of our lives and a plant is not. You get it...without clear and finalistic answers to lean on what else gives us direction, hope or self meaning? Faith. The belief that something much higher started this universe and will end it. Most days it will pass you by without you noticing, but the next time you are alone say at the beach, and you hear the ocean, and the birds singing against a blue background. You take a deep breath and hear you own heartbeat against your earthly thoughts. Who do you thank for that serene and beautiful moment? Is it not a gift of sorts. Who gave it to you? Anything, or anyone. I know who I thank every time.

truthfully i don't believe any of that historical fact stuff.I have absolutely no proof that jesus or god is real, and until I do I will never believe in him. why should I believe in him when all I have to do is belive in myself? God and jesus (If they were even real) have put me through hell, and I have never done anything to them. put it this way if they were so real they would be like the jocks and preps at my school.

There are many many books which attempt to prove the historical reality of Jesus - most of which are worth a read - More than a carpenter etc - they make valid points such as the fact that within a few decades of his death, thousands were put to death in his name by the Romans - they were the ones that had been, or spoken to, the thousands who had seen Jesus, and were willing to die for their convictions. If he hadnt have existed, then it doesn't seem likely that that this would have happened. Just a simple observation, but it does make you think... Faith is great - for Christians, but to tell a non believer that THEY have to take it on faith is asking a bit much. We have to be ready with an answer for what we believe. The idea of Jesus being a mythical character only started to find fashion with French philospohers in the late 18th century. Our BC/AD dating structure only bacame used 6-700 years after Christ, so I wouldnt necessairly offer that as proof. And Easter and Christmas I would just throw out the window as they are just older pagan ceremonies taken over by the RCC and turned into christian ceremonies. Maybe more convincing non-bible points might be: Christian writers from the First/Second century take the reality of Jesus as an assumption, ie Polycarp who wrote around 110AD, who was an old man and conversed with many who had seen Jesus, and had been a companion on John the apostle. Pliny the Younger(Roman governor) writing around 110AD complained about Christians, and gave them a simple option - curse Christ or die. That many refused to curse Christ indicates that they thought he must have lived :) - I mean he had only died 80 years earlier - sort of like us believing in someone who died in 1925 - we would know plenty of people who has seen or meet such a person. Clement of Rome writing in 95 AD mentions 10 of the 27 New Testament books - surely proof that within 60 years of Christs death, a real movement have sprung up, revolving around a central figure, if it had been based on a lie it would be hard to see it flourishing like it did. The roman historian Tacitus who wrote in 115AD, talks about Christians when as says Nero blamed christians for the burning of Rome in 64ad. Tacitus states that the founder of the name christians, christus, had been put to death by pontius pilate. verification from another non christian source. For me - I take it on faith that Jesus existed, but its nice to know that there are other proofs.

Although I am not a historian, I do know from archaeological fact that the all the Biblical events did happen as recorded in the Bible, but that Jesus really did exist. The death and life of Jesus is one of the most well known archaeological facts. In fact, our whole date is based on Jesus, so is most of the world's date eg England and Australia, America etc. From my knowledge, it is only some of the Asian countries which have a different date eg China. I suppose you can go around in circles proving the existence of Jesus, although it can and has been done. But we know He is real not because of the historical evidence, but because we felt a conviction in our spirits which made us curious about Jesus. Then we eventually gave our lives to Him and when we did, we actually not only almost physically felt Him, but we see in some cases, physical healings taking place and a dramatic emotional change in a person to the complete opposite to what they were before. Asking the question 'How do you know that Jesus is real' is like asking someone who has never been kissed in their whole lives, 'how do you know that a kiss feels good?' I suppose theyll never know and even if the feeling of a kiss by an attractive person was explained to them, they will still not fully understand it and think it is all a lot of hype. But once they are kissed themselves, then they understand what the hype was about. It is like that with Jesus. To someone who doesn't know Him or has never felt Him, I suppose it does seem like nonsense. Because they don't feel anything. But once they feel Jesus, theyll know He is real, even if they don't have a high degree of scientific and archaeological knowledge.

I do beleive Jesus was a real man but not a supernatural figure. Also the jesus we read about in the bible may not be an accurate portrayl of the acctual person.NOTE:Samthecoolbear you make a terrible point. By saying that you know that God exists because of a holiday is like saying that a child knows that the tooth fairy exists because money was left under their pillow. Saying that you know that Jesus rose to heaven and that skeptics should watch the Passion is like saying that skeptics of alien landings should watch E.T.

Roman death records have him named Crestus and have his execution recorded. (The Romans prided themselves on their ability to keep records) Makes for interesting conversation. . .doesn't prove divinity but it sure is fascinating to think about that dude who wrote it down. . .wouldn't you love to ask him a question or two?

See, Donovon, that is what is called circular logic. Before you can say he's real because the Bible says he is, you must first proove the Bible is completely true. Anyway, there is a POSSIBILITY he existed. Some of the records about Jesus from Tacitus {or was it Josephus? I can't remember} appear to have been added after his death. Basically, there are about five mentions of Jesus outside of the Bible, and only about three of them are considered to have come from around the time he lived, and not several decades later. Two of these have been pretty much proven hoaxes, scribbled in by Christians after the fact.

Update: Interesting thoughts Tball, now you prove her wrong, show me your facts.................I know he is real because history proves he existed. I know he's real because the Word of God say's he's real. I know he's real because my heart and soul desires his presence. I know he's real because the precious Holy Spirit of God draws me to him. I know he's real because no one can prove to me including; historians, scientists or anyone else, that he isn't real!

Umm... The ossuary which 'Beloved' refers to has been found to be a hoax. In fact, there is NO solid evidence of Jesus's existence as a man, let alone a messiah. In an area where meticulous birth and death records were kept, under Roman rule, no record of his crucifiction/death/burial exists. Personally, I beleive that he may have existed as a Jewish reformer... with deeds and miraculous exploits added later. Back in that day, no god or caesar was worth his salt unless miracles and great deeds were attributed to them. Marketing 101.

I don't. There is no way of knowing whether he ever existed or not. All evidence is anecdotal and hearsay. It's probable that he did exist, because of how famous he is and everything, but there is no way of verifying this. He's also not real in any physical sense anymore, he's been dead for 2000 years. He is real in the sense that he has touched the lives of many and that there have been innumerable wars and atrocities committed in his name, but he's not real the way the moon is real, or the Sun is real. So if you know he's real, then you're wrong. You may be totally 100% sure he's real, but that doesn't mean you 'know' it for sure.

There are historic documents outside of the bible that make reference to JESUS, they have also found the tomb of Ciaphas the High Preist who was directly involved in JESUS'S crucifixion, they have also found the tomb of JESUS'S brother James. Interestingly enough the tomb has inscribed on it James the brother of JESUS. Read a book! even secular scholars don't deny JESUS' exsistance anymore.
