John 8:32 cannot be separated from 8:31(b)

31...Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Freedom, true freedom comes from the truth, and the truth is contained in Jesus Christ's teachings. His teachings lead to knowledge of the truth, and knowledge of the truth leads to freedom.

John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. 29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. 30 As he spake these words, many believed on him. 31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. When we believe the truth about who Jesus is and what He accomplished on the cross (v 28,29), then do those things that He has commanded (v31) we will be His disciples and be set free from our bondage to sin (v33-35) forever (v36). 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. What a liberty we have in Christ!

This verse says 'Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.' This is so true and it is encouraging for someone who is feeling guilty or is caught up in sin. Because if they just confess their problem to God, no matter how shameful it is, they will be set free. It also helps me to accept Bible verses that I may have felt a little condemmed over because it basically says that these verses arn't there to condemn or inhibit us, but to free us.
